The multidimensional Darwin Ecosystème is both an eco-renovation real estate project, a centre for eco-friendly activities and a local eco-district. The premises, converted in 2012 from a former barracks, are inspired by the Negawatt approach, and are today home to dozens of economic players working primarily in three sectors of the future: the green economy, the creative economy and responsible business.

Jean-Marc Gancille, you are Director of Ecological Transition at Darwin. How do you explain the fact that users have taken on board eco-reflexes and put them into practice so quickly ?

"All Darwin members have chosen to come together in an association called “Les Darwiniens”, with the aim of involving volunteers and getting them to work together on issues of economic cooperation, ecological transition, bringing spaces alive, etc. All members share a common vision and this is probably the key to the active involvement of users through different actions and solutions that result from these: Low-tech logic, which encourages resourcefulness, recovery and DIY, is the basis of the approach. Workshops and other dedicated locations have emerged to encourage reuse and extended service lives for products: wood, bike, motorcycle, recycling, etc. workshops.

Future occupants are encouraged to be eco-responsible by using various tools: green leases, contractual ecological governance, detailed measurement of consumption through the Miuseec digital platform for monitoring environmental impacts and "fun theory" to make all this fun! Sharing and pooling of areas, equipment, resources, etc. are the key words of the initiative for improving premises”.

In short, the site is based on a community of players who embody the project and its values. These players are embodying the findings of Charles Darwin, who wrote: “It is not the most intellectual of the species that survives; it is not the strongest that survives; but the species that survives is the one that is able best to adapt and adjust to the changing environment in which it finds itself”.
